Statement of Sovereignty
The Republic of Soundland, established on the 2nd of August, 2020, is a sovereign and independent nation and is entitled to all the rights and duties of a state, including the right to exercise sovereignty over its territorial bodies. We affirm our status as a state and our basic international rights in accordance with the principles set forth in the Montevideo Convention of 1933, which prescribes the requirements for statehood and the rights of states.
Soundland possesses a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. As such, we meet all criteria for statehood under Article 1 of the Montevideo Convention.
Article 3 of the Montevideo Convention states that "The political existence of the state is independent of recognition by the other states. Even before recognition the state has the right to defend its integrity and independence". As such, meeting the criteria of statehood under the convention, we reserve these rights.
We uphold the principles of Democracy, Liberty, Equality for all persons, as put forth by our constitution, and strive to protect and promote international law and human rights within our borders and abroad. Soundland declared independence from the United States to protect the human rights of our citizens.
The Republic of Soundland recognizes that territories we assert sovereignty over are the ancestral territory of the Suquamish People. Read our land acknowledgment here. By administering these territories, we do not attempt to usurp the historical sovereignty of indigenous peoples over this land, but rather act independently from the United States government, which would otherwise hold national jurisdiction. The Republic of Soundland will never assert authority over the sovereign territories of indigenous tribes and nations, as set out by treaty. The Republic of Soundland is committed to the principles of the Land Back movement. We are committed to maintaining free passage for indigenous peoples through Soundlandian territory.
